Top 5 Resolutions for 2008

By Christina Szumal, The Company Corporation®

Each new year provides an opportunity to pause and reflect on how to make the next year even more successful. Were you happy with your business progress last year? Do you have a development plan for this year? Check out these example resolutions to help you rev up your business planning. Start planning now to make 2008 your most satisfying year in business.

  1. "I resolve to review my business plan every quarter." Although your financial responsibilities and mission statement may stay the same, practice updating other elements of your business plan. You should be able to give an "elevator speech" about your mission statement to just about anyone.
  2. "I resolve to research at least one competitor per month." Conduct a competitive analysis of your marketplace. Check out competitors' products, services, sales, and advertising. Ask yourself why customers come to you and be able to answer confidently.
  3. "I resolve to look at my site today and start updating out-of-date content." Show you care about your Web site with updated products and offers. If you have a copyright, make sure to update the year to 2008. Promote testimonials if you have them; just ask for permission to use actual customer comments. You spent time creating your brand, so promote and protect it. Try highlighting it with business cards and stationery.
  4. "I resolve to join a new business-oriented community and stay active every day/week/month." Networking is a two-way street. You want to share your ideas with as many people as you ask for help. Join a local business owners' group or an online community. Branch out and try a new social circle. Come prepared with your business cards.
  5. "I resolve to display my business resolutions and take pride in my progress in making 2008 my most successful year ever." Review your 2008 resolutions daily. Take the time to identify your goals and write them down. Hang the printout where you will regularly see it or post it in your calendar. Focus on your goals often and realign if you get off track.
